The new year rolled in with fresh energy and new resolutions. For me, one of 'em was to get off my rocking chair and shake up things a bit by calling everyone I dig in and around Brooklyn and starting to piece together the scene I'd like to see jump off.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Hip-hop mogul/open source enthusiast, the1shanti, releases new song professing love for Attack of the Show hostess Olivia Munn in hopes to produce one hit wonder for her
BROOKLYN, NY - "Guess what? I'm Indian...Olivia Munn sitting on my couch, a nice bottle of wine and recording a single using open source audio apps would make for a dream date," says Nathan "the1shanti" Laskar as he listens to the final notes play out on his harmonium and tabla-tinged new single "I *heart* Olivia Munn".  His goal?  Simple:  To get an on-air kiss from the hostess of G4's Attack of the Show, and be considered as a producer for Munn's "One hit wonder" project.  "You can call me the posterchild for many things that I've done for my people around the world - but this one's for me," exclaims the five-foot-three animated emcee.
The Brooklyn-based rapper/songwriter/producer is no newcomer to gaining an audience with those he admires.  In 2006, he caught the attention of hip-hop godfather, Afrika Bambaataa, earning him the title "Indian Bambaataa".  Three short years later, he is writing for and co-producing Bambaataa's next project with a who's who of global celebrities contributing their performances through the internet.  "I've become more comfortable with sharing who I really am through my music," remarks Laskar, "and that version of 'me' just happens to dig tall smart and quirky chicks."
While putting the finishing touches on his forthcoming EP, “Attack of the Flow” (a play on the title of Munn's show), Laskar explains that he is using completely free, or open source, software found on the internet to produce the project, "I heard Olivia wants to make a one hit wonder, so I've got a no-cost solution for her...all we've gotta do is get into the same room."
Future plans include releasing source files for the single for other Munn fans to remix via his website, www.the1shanti.com.  A listing of free software which can be used to remix the track is available at www.opensourcehiphop.org, for which Laskar has
assembled a squad of digital and music industry experts to help him fulfill his vision of teaching the digital generation how to record and produce hit songs...for free.  "The cost of entry into the music biz relies 100% on talent now," smirks Laskar, "that and the ideas behind your messages."

I think one of the biggest fears any commercial musician can experience is this:  Creating what they consider to be a great representation of where they are in life through music only to have a label mishap not allow for it to see the light of day.
J.J. Brown, Dan "The Deacon" Maier and I worked many sleepless nights over many months to put together my sophomore solo album entitled the1shanti.  Good friends came together to help round out the family of loved ones who dedicated their energy toward making my vision come true.  Rod Morata with the photography, Sayuri Ozawa  with the design, Nawfcyde and Resk sharing production duties with J.J. Brown.  It was amazing.  In a predictable yet unexpected turn of events, Rawkus took the project on and I had finally found it a home.
One morning I awoke to find that the label no longer had any of its catalogue available.  Anywhere.
J.J. Brown's Connect The Dots. was released this past month.  He's not only one of my best friends, but one of my favorite producers of all time.  We, as the Laskar Music and 5G family, would like to celebrate our future with you by sharing a moment in the present.  We have decided not to look for another label as a home for my self-titled second album.  This month, pay what you can here and give it a listen.  If you can't pay anything, listen and enjoy.  Let me know what you think.  Spread love the Brooklyn way.

Black Friday passed not too long ago. We are full swing into the holiday season. Ever year, I'm reminded of the one element of the human condition which continues to blossom as the years pass: The want for material goods.
